Jay Carder infuses raw, tribal rhythms with house, breaks and electronica in dance-heavy sets that engages the spiritual side of the dance floor.
Throwing parties for the underground dance community, Jay’s cut her teeth in clubs with powdered floors and crowds that dance with pure emotion. Her unique connection to the floor is transferred into groove-laden journey-sets that defy you not to dance.
A versatile DJ, Jay is just as comfortable headlining festival stages as she is kick-starting basement raves. From Fela to Bonobo, her wide-ranging influences are rooted in music that expresses the soul. Laden with percussion, her club selections are a concoction of heavy, abstract ‘London/Bristol’ bass, and spiritual, driving sounds reminiscent of Black Coffee and the afro-tech movement coming out of South Africa.
She's played internationally alongside the likes of Modeselektor, Groove Armada, Artwork, The Black Madonna, Paul Woolford, Honey Dijon, Peggy Gou, Osunlade and more. Clubs include London’s Fabric, Printworks, Ministry of Sound and Ibiza’s Pikes; festivals include Field Day, Lost Village, Snowbombing (Austria), Boomtown, Secret Garden Party, Asa Baako (Ghana), Meet Me There Weekender (Ghana), Kendal/Standon Calling and Wilderness.
Jay is also a promoter and resident DJ for Voyage events, a Birmingham-based club night that focuses on curating unique extended sets and B2Bs; most recently HAAi x Daniel Avery and Shanti Celeste. Her London-based club nights with collective 4 To The Floor attract house dancers, hustlers, b-boys, voguers, waackers and other dance styles from Paris, Japan, Berlin and major dance cities from around the world.
DOWNTEMPO / ALTERNATIVE
Jay has been gradually making a name for herself outside of the club scene as a truly meditative selector. Her radio show 'House of Carder' has been building a steady following over the last four years for late night IDM, trip hop and instrumental hip hop. Through these unique shows, Jay is also championing chilled beats and after hours sounds from India through a collaboration with Mumbai's Wavlngth. Each month champions a new, undiscovered artist.
As one of the few people championing this unique sound in current downtempo music, she's caught the attention of the 'inventor of trip hop' James Lavelle [Unkle/Mo'Wax], who she's interviewed a number of times, as well as supported at his own club night, 'Living In My Headphones'.
